Are all students the same? Are all teachers the same? Do gender differences matter? How can we sustain student interest? We believe this event can help us find creative answers to these questions with fellow educators

Dr Carol Ann Tomlinson

Carol Ann Tomlinson is William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor and Chair of Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Policy at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education where she is also Co-Director of the University’s Institutes on Academic Diversity. Prior to joining the faculty at UVa, she was a teacher for 21 years. During that time, she taught students in high school, preschool, and middle school and also administered programs for struggling and advanced learners. [learn_more] She was Virginia’s Teacher of the Year in 1974. Carol is author of over 250 books, book chapters, articles, and other educational materials including: How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed Ability Classrooms, The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners, Fulfilling the Promise of the Differentiated Classroom: Strategies and Tools for Responsive Teaching, (with Jay McTighe) Differentiating Instruction and Understanding by Design: Connecting Content and Kids, (with Kay Brimijoin and Lane Narvaez) The Differentiated School: Making Revolutionary Changes in Teaching and Learning, (with Marcia Imbeau) Leading and Managing a Differentiated Classroom and A Brief Guide to Managing a Differentiated Classroom, and (with David Sousa) Differentiation and the Brain: How Neuroscience Supports the Learner-Friendly Classroom. Her books on differentiation are available in 13 languages. Carol was named Outstanding Professor at Curry in 2004 and received an All-University Teaching Award in 2008. She works throughout the United States and internationally with educators who seek to create classrooms that are more effective with academically diverse student populations.[/learn_more]

Dr. William McBride

Dr. William McBride has worked in a variety of public schools and university settings as both a teacher and a consultant. In middle and secondary schools, he has served as a Reading Specialist, an English and Drama teacher, a gifted and a talented instructor, and a curriculum coordinator. On the university level, Dr. McBride has assisted in the training and evaluation of middle and secondary English teachers. For fifteen years Bill worked as an editor and National Consultant with McDougal Littell/Houghton Mifflin Publishing Co., developing both elementary and secondary literature and language arts materials.[learn_more] He has contributed to highly successful programmes that reflect the latest research in teaching reading, literature, and social studies, including The Language of Literature, The Writer’s Craft, Language Network, World History, The Americans, and Creating America. An exciting and inspirational keynote speaker, William shares his professional beliefs and teaching strategies at conferences and workshops all over the United States and abroad. Mr Daren Jacobs

Daren Jacobs gained his degree in Philosophy and Psychology (specialising in the Philosophy of Mind, Cognition and Creative Thought) before running the Brighton branch of The Big Issue Magazine. He then trained as an actor at The Drama Studio and worked as a professional actor for 10 years in theatre, television and film.
For the past 12 years, he has worked extensively with a wide range of organisations to deliver training and development programmes in communication, presentation and performance management skills.[learn_more]
In 2003 Daren began working with the Mythodrama methodology and he now delivers Mythodrama programmes to a wide range of organisations in both the public & private sectors all over the world. He has delivered programmes to a large number of schools and colleges and spoken at many schools and Head teachers conferences in his role as a lead presenter at Contender Charlie.[/learn_more]

Ms Marian Cox, MA

Marian Cox has a BA in English from University College London and an MA in Education. She has been a teacher of English First and Second Language and Literature and Head of English in many schools and countries for over 25 years. She has authored a series of A level Literature study guides and teacher packs as well as a suite of IGCSE First Language books for Cambridge University Press. She is currently a lead principal examiner for First Language English and a consultant, resources author and teacher trainer for Cambridge IGCSE English. She has given presentations and conducted training events for teachers all over the world.

Dr Claudia Ferradas

Claudia Ferradas is an experienced presenter and ELT author who travels the world as a teacher educator. She has run training sessions and participated in conferences in South America, the Caribbean, the USA, Europe and South East Asia. She holds an MA in Education and Professional Development from the University of East Anglia, and a PhD in English Studies from the University of Nottingham.[learn_more] In Argentina, where she is based, she is a lecturer at the Instituto de Enseñanza Superior en Lenguas Vivas and the Instituto Superior del Profesorado “Joaquín V. González”, Buenos Aires, and in the MA programme in Literatures in English at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza. In the UK, Claudia is a Visiting Fellow and research supervisor at the School of Languages, Leeds Metropolitan University, and an Associate Trainer with NILE (Norwich Institute for Language Education). She also teaches in the MA programme in TEFL at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Spain.Claudia often works as a consultant, materials designer and facilitator for the British Council and has co-chaired the Oxford Conference on the Teaching of Literature on five occasions.She has also worked as Project Manager for the Penguin Active Readers Teacher Support Programme.[/learn_more]
