Heads and teachers involved in bilingual education who wish to network with other bilingual educators in the region and listen to internationally renowned speakers explore the latest trends in the present educational scenario.

What is the theme of the Conference? “Educating for a Changing World”

Schools worldwide are confronted with the crude reality that our present school system is not ready to respond to our learners’ present and future needs, prepare them for jobs which still do not exist and incorporate the new learning technologies. This is enhanced by the fact that knowledge can be accessed freely and widely and global communication has transformed intercultural awareness. Which are the main issues we must address to do things right at school? What should our school curriculum cover? How should we select, train and motivate teachers for this quest? How should teachers teach and assess in this new context? How can we secure learning for all? We believe this event can help us find creative answers to these questions and design new schemes with other fellow educators.

Pasi Sahlberg

Pasi Sahlberg is a Finnish citizen who received MSc (Mathematics) in 1984 from University of Turku, Teacher’s Diploma from the University of Helsinki in 1985, and PhD (Education) from the University of Jyvaskylä in 1996. He has worked as teacher, teacher trainer, researcher, change coach, and policy advisor in Finland. Pasi served as Senior Education Specialist in the World Bank in Washington, DC (2003-07) and as Lead Education Specialist in the European Training Foundation, in Torino, Italy (2007-09). [learn_more] He is an active international speaker and writer, and has worked with the OECD, The World Bank, The European Commission and as advisor to several governments in more than 40 countries. In his current job as director general of CIMO (National Centre for International Mobility and Cooperation) at the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture he promotes internationalization in the Finnish education system and awareness of Finland’s experience in educational change. Pasi’s research interests include educational change, education policy and school improvement and he is Adjunct Professor at the University of Helsinki and at the University of Oulu. He is member of the Board of Directors of the ASCD, The International Association for the Study of Cooperation in Education (IASCE) and The Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Helsinki. He is editorial board member of several professional journals, such as Journal of Educational Change and Journal for Educational Policy Studies. Heidi Hayes Jacobs

Heidi Hayes Jacobs is founder and president of Curriculum Designers, Inc., consults to schools nationally and internationally, and is executive director of the Curriculum Mapping Institute. She has taught courses at Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York City since 1981. Her book, Active Literacy Across the Curriculum: Strategies for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening is published by Eye on Education and her online courses appear with PBS Teacherline. Ben Walden

Ben Walden’s work with Contender Charlie has received major acclaim at Heads and Deputies Conferences across the UK and Internationally. He is an actor and presenter who has played a number of leading roles on television and for the Donmar and Almeida theatre companies as well as at Shakespeare’s Globe. Having run many masterclasses for the Shakespeare’s Globe Education Centre he has worked in close collaboration with Mark Rylance and Richard Olivier in the development of an experiential theatre learning technique called Mythodrama.[learn_more]
As an Senior Associate at Olivier Mythodrama, Ben is now running sessions bringing this work at Leadership level into a broad range of organisations across the world. He has also run projects at a number of leading business schools including Columbia, OSBS, the London Business School and Insead. “Contender Charlie” is the company he has formed to take this, and other theatre techniques, into education. Its courses have now become a regular fixture at Headteacher conferences as well as at staff and student events all over Britain. He is a father of four children and, aside from his family, Ben’s chief passion is using theatre as a medium to bring meaning, purpose and greater personal expression to the lives of young people. John Guy, PhD

John Guy is a Senior Education Advisor to Cambridge International Examinations. In September 2010, he retired after 25 years as a sixth form college principal, the last 18 as Principal of Farnborough Sixth Form College, the largest sixth form college in the UK with some 3250 full-time 16-19 year old students. The College was designated as outstanding by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools who declared its teaching and learning to be the best in the country. Previously, John had been Principal of St. Philip’s RC Sixth Form College in Birmingham and had taught chemistry in grammar, independent and comprehensive schools in the UK.[learn_more]
He studied chemistry at Birmingham University, graduating with first class honours in 1971, before undertaking a post-doctoral fellowship at Cambridge University, becoming a Fellow of St. Edmund’s College. Ginno Kelley

Dr. Ginno Kelley is an Director of Professional Development at Promethean, a global leader and innovator in interactive learning technology. Prior to his career at Promethean, Ginno Kelley was most recently Assistant Director for the Florida Center for Instructional Technology’s Florida Digital Educator Program. The program served teachers from the state of Florida and provided professional development for the creation of technology-rich curricula and the integration of 21st century tools. Mr. Kelley also served as a high school teacher for mathematics and technology for many years. He has also worked with struggling students developing cutting-edge multimedia environments that promote student voice and achievement. Sandra Roberts

Sandra is an experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) leading a large social enterprise company known as Southend Education Trust and Chair of The National Association of School Partnerships in the UK. She is also the director of several private, public and 3rd sector organisations and a consultant to several groups of schools. She has over 30 years experience in education as a headteacher, senior local government officer, company director and CEO.[learn_more]

Claudia Ferradas, PhD

Claudia is currently employed by the British Council in Argentina as an English Language Teacher Trainer. She is an experienced presenter and ELT author who has travelled the world as a teacher educator. She has run training sessions and participated in conferences in South America, the Caribbean, the USA, Europe and South East Asia. She holds an MA in Education and Professional Development from the University of East Anglia and a PhD in English Studies at the University of Nottingham.[learn_more]
In Argentina, she is a lecturer at the Instituto de Enseñanza Superior en Lenguas Vivas, Buenos Aires, and in the MA programme in Literatures in English at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza. In the UK, Claudia has been a Visiting Fellow and research supervisor at the School of Languages, Leeds Metropolitan University, and an Associate Trainer with NILE (Norwich Institute for Language Education). She has also taught in the MA programme in TEFL at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
Claudia has co-chaired the Oxford Conference on the Teaching of Literature on five occasions. She has also worked as Project Manager for the Penguin Active Readers Teacher Support Programme and has been the co-ordinator of the ESSARP Centre cultural programme for several years.[/learn_more]

Katie Mackenzie Stuart

After graduating, Katie Mackenzie Stuart taught English, Maths and Science to secondary school students. She them worked for over 20 years as a publisher of textbooks for Primary and Secondary schools across a range of subject for both the UK and International markets, including the Checkpoint series and books for IGCSE. Since January 2011, she has worked for Hodder running workshops for teachers in many parts of the world including the Caribbean, the Middle East, India, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Cecilia Calero

In 2000, Cecilia Calero began her studies at the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales – Universidad de Buenos Aires, (FCEN – UBA). During her years as an undergraduate student, she worked in the Inorganic Chemistry Department (02/2001-01/2003) and the Physiology and Molecular Biology Department (03/2003-12/2003). Where she was part of several research projects in areas related to neuroscience and immunology.[learn_more]

In March 2006, she received her degree in Biological Sciences from the FCEN and began her doctoral thesis, with a scholarship granted by CONICET, under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Calvo at the Instituto de Investigaciones en Ingeniería Genética y Biología Molecular (INGEBI-CONICET), where she had been working since June 2004. During this time she focused on the study of the modulation of synaptic receptors. Her research investigation led to the publication and presentation of her results in high impact journals and conferences, both nationals and internationals. And finally, in March 2011, she obtained her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires.

Throughout her academic life, Dr Calero felt drawn to neuroscience and in particular, to Cognitive Science, reason why she decided to conduct her postdoctoral work in the Laboratorio de Neurociencia Integrativa under the supervision of Dr. Mariano Sigman. It is here where she received a scholarship from CONICET to carry out a project entitled “Little Teachers”. This research seeks to understand, how the teaching abilities develops during the first years of life in young children without the need for formal education.The “Little Teachers” project aims to shed new light and provide a vast corpus of information about the teaching brain and the psychological organization, development, and phenomenology of the ability to teach.[/learn_more]

Andrea Goldin

Andrea Goldin is a Biological Sciences Graduate, University of Buenos Aires, 2006. At the moment she is finishing her doctoral thesis in neurosciences at the same university. She is a scholar of the CONICET (National Council of Scientific and Technical Investigation). She is authoress to several scientific pieces of work, published in prestigious international magazines. She is coordinator and organiser of the Campamento Expedición Ciencia (Science Expedition Camp), organized by the civil association Expedición Ciencia, “scientific camp for students with motivation and high skills for science”. She conducted many talks for the popularisation of science and several science workshops children and adolescents.[learn_more]
She participated in the dictation of several teacher training science workshops [Expedición Docencia (Teaching Expedition) among others, organised by the civil association Expedición Ciencia (Science Expedition) and by the Instituto Nacional de Formación Docente (INFD) (Teacher Training National Institute), financed by the Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos (Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI)].
She wrote chapters for Biology and Physics books for Publishing Houses Puerto de palos, Estrada and SM. She developed several educational resources for the site Educared and for the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences) , FCEyN, UBA. Grace Vilar

She is a graduated English teacher who has 30 years of classroom experience. She was Head of Primary at Colegio San Antonio, a bilingual school in San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires until 2011. She travels to the UK on a yearly basis to work in schools, work with the most renown Phonics and Literacy experts and get training to improve her knowledge and teaching practice. She works as s Synthetic Phonics Trainer, an Educational and Literacy Consultant and Teacher Trainer offering advice and providing training in synthetic phonics in English in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brasil Mexico and Peru. She is a Jolly Phonics Professional Trainer, Phonics International Trainer and Oxford University Press Phonics trainer.

Colm Flanagan

Colm is currently Headmaster of the Grange Prep School in Santiago, Chile. He has led both state and independent schools in the UK and abroad and is passionate about improving the quality of teaching and learning in his schools. In addition to providing for the continuous professional development of his staff, he has successfully introduced “The Leader in Me” programme to support the development of leadership skills in all children.

Mariana Morales Fuentes

Mariana holds a Philosophy degree from the Universidad Católica Argentina and a Teacher´s Diploma from CONSUDEC. She has served as a classroom teacher for the last 10 years, in both Primary and Secondary School, teaching Spanish as well as English subjects. She currently teaches Philosophy in Colegio El Buen Ayre.
She started her career as a researcher, teacher trainer and speaker in 2006 as she contributed in ALCED Argentina, a local association that studies single-sex schooling and the differences in learning between girls and boys.[learn_more]
She has been in charge of developing FranklinCovey´s Education Practice in Argentina since 2010. Entrusted with the task of spreading Dr. Stephen R. Covey´s legacy in the education, family and community sphere, she has become a certified facilitator in The 7 Habits for Highly Effective People workshops, The Leader in Me programme, and other solutions that integrate FranklinCovey´s valuable proposal.
Most importantly, she is the wife to Patricio, and mom of three wonderful children.
